School Education Programme

animal management do's and don'ts DVD programme

DSS Animal Management’s Dog Do’s and Don’ts School Education programme aims to educate children in the right way to behave around dogs, gives them strategies to prevent attack and injury and teaches them the responsibilities, both to the dog and to the community, of dog ownership.

This programme can be purchased by schools or parents or anyone that would like information on advising children on how to behave around dogs. The programme consists of a DVD and booklet.

The comprehensive booklet gives instructions on how to present this programme. Each chapter gives teachers the information necessary to teach their children. Then each chapter gives suggestions on how to teach that information. Examples of questions are given. These are aimed at stimulating discussion and suggestions are also given in ways the messages can be taught.

In addition to this is the DVD. Each chapter in the booklet relates to a chapter in the DVD. Chapters are applicable to different age groups from approximately 5 years to 12 years. Teachers can then show the children strategies and examples of information that has been taught and discussed.

DVD/Booklet Chapters

Leave Stray or Unknown Dogs Alone, What to do if a Dog Comes up to you, How To Behave Around Dogs, Safe Play With Dogs, Caring For A Dog, Rules, Laws And Responsible Dog Ownership, Understanding Dogs, Health Risks, What To Do About Problem Dogs.

In addition to these chapters the booklet includes chapters on:  DSS Animal Management, David Manning (our presenter), Aims of the Programme, How to Present the Programme, Dog Incident Report Form,  First Aid and Phone Numbers, Teacher Resources, Suggested Activities and Additional Material, Order Form.

Follow up activities are also suggested and Teacher Resources are available on our website and can be downloaded free of charge.

Teachers have an opportunity to use the DVD and the supporting material to plan a unit related to Keeping Ourselves Safe and the Health and Social Studies Curriculum or should a problem arise in the community involving stray dogs, a dog attack or any dog related problems then this programme can be used as a one off to ensure children are aware of strategies they can use to keep themselves safe.  The problems caused by uncontrolled and unwanted dogs are certainly issues that older children can be made aware of as future dog owners.

Take Home Booklet

The Take Home Booklet is a 10 page booklet which includes 11 colour photographs. This booklet is currently given to each child who attends a presentation given by DSS staff at schools in Manukau, Franklin and Wellington. The information in this booklet will be helpful to dog owners, non-dog owners and people wanting to own a dog. It reinforces the need for people to be aware of their responsibilities as dog owners and to ensure they are aware of dog ownership laws.
